Role
Why do we have a governing body?
To support the headteacher and senior management team in their leadership and running of the school. The governing body helps them make decisions about the curriculum, staffing, buildings and the ethos of the school. We have become governors because we want to join in and make a difference.
Who are the members of the governing body?
The full governing body comprises of:
-
six parent governors
-
four staff governors
-
an associate staff governor
-
four local authority governors
-
four community governors
-
a clerk to the governors
What does the governing body do?
The full governing body (FGB) meets every half-term, with a rolling agenda including termly headteacher’s reports, committee reports, policy approvals etc.
There are also three committees – Performance and Standards, Premises, and Finance and Personnel. Each committee also meets every half-term, and reports back at each FGB meeting. The committees undertake much of the actual work and detailed discussion about policy and developments.
The chairs of the committees, the headteacher and the chair of governors meet once a term as well, to discuss things more strategically and agree the general direction of developments.
Most governors have a special responsibility, for example, we have a governor responsible for liaising with the school about ICT, including the provision of hardware and software, and the teaching and learning of ICT.
All governors are linked to a particular class within the school. This is to encourage the governors (especially those who are not parents of children in the school) to visit the school and get a better understanding of it, and also to give the children and staff confidence that the governors are real people who care about them and the school.
