National Curriculum

Our curriculum aims to provide all children with exciting learning opportunities.

As a school we are working hard to develop a ‘Milverton Curriculum’ that reflects the context of the school, inspires the children and allows for achievement in all areas. The components of this curriculum go well beyond the National Curriculum.

Children in Years 1 - 6 follow the National Curriculum at Key Stages 1 and 2 - for more information click on the link below:

Children in Reception follow the Foundation Stage Curriculum - for more information click on the link below:

Understanding the Foundation Stage Curriculum

As well as covering the different subject areas within the National Curriculum, since the Spring Term 2007 as a school we have been focussing on the 'aspects of learning' that underpin successful learning and need to be promoted throughout our curriculum.

Miss Wood, Deputy Headteacher,  writes

"At Milverton, we have been learning how to learn. We have learnt how to be excellent listeners and how to communicate in lots of different ways.

We are experts at collaborating and use 'critique sandwiches' and ‘Stars and Wishes’ to help us improve our own work and the work of our friends.

We have also learnt that our voices are important and that we can use different volumes, such as partner and group voices, to help others to hear us properly.

Another BIG lesson we have learnt is self-awareness. We have LOADS of amazing emotions and we know how to manage the trickier ones by changing our behaviour, asking for help, asking questions, using our choice boxes, learning from mistakes, relaxing and taking deep breaths to calm down. We know all about empathy too – it is important for us to recognise and talk about how other people are feeling so we are all happy at school.
We have been working hard to improve our enquiry skills, using ‘question fruits’ to help us think of good things to ask and finding the answers on our own in lots of different ways.

We use ‘success criteria’ in our lessons to help us to do the best work we can. Sometimes we even set our own and we use them to evaluate our work and the work of our friends.

At Milverton, we are very motivated learners. There are lots of amazing ways that we celebrate our work and we are starting to lead some of our own learning, choosing what to learn and how to present what we have found out.

Most importantly, we are trying very hard to become the best learners that we can and are succeeding in many ways!"

Our 'Looking at Learning' Newsletters let parents know about all the exciting learning that has been taking place in our school.
